Ulcerative Coliitis

We are having success bringing both UC and arthritis into remission or under control with plant based compounds.   Please let us know if you would like to test this product.

To understand how I cured my ulcerative colitis (mostly drug free, mostly only through diet) one has to envision four problems simultaneously:

1. bacterial/enzyme induced intestinal inflammation,

2. bacterial/enzyme induced intestinal spasming,

3. stress induced psychosomatic intestinal spasming, (with more experience it appears the stress of a flu can bring on UC symptoms)

4. prescription drug induced intestinal spasming.

As you read over the information throughout my web site keep the 4 aspects of this disease in the front of your mind.

Very simply the medical doctor, Sidney Valentine Haas (born 1870 died 1964), who authored the “Specific Carbohydrate Diet” (SCD) in his 1951 medical text book suggested that the cause of intestinal disease was something like a intestinal microbial bacteria or enzyme going awry.  As I became healed I realized that this intestinal microbe could be a yeast, or anything that shouldn’t be there.  Very simplified SCD is all about eating foods that don’t feed unwanted intestinal microbes.  That is the easiest explanation for why Sidney had a 97% cure rate within three years.  I took 2 years 6 1/2 months to be cured to be able to go back to eating normal food.

Medical doctors today are simply trained to prescribe anti-inflammatory, or other, prescription drugs that hide the symptoms of intestinal disease but are not a cure.

If the microbes or enzymes (which are the real cause of intestinal disease) don’t have any food or anything to work on then they simply die off to a very low population that can be maintained in a harmonious balance.  This concept of being in a harmonious balance is best understood by looking at a mountain forest that has not been logged or otherwise disturbed by man.  A wild native forest is generally very well balanced with a large diversity of plants, animals, mushrooms, etc. that all work harmoniously together.  You can think about introducing lions, tigers, and elephants in the Cascade Mountains in Washington State and their disruption to that native forest as the same as the new microbe or enzyme that colonized our intestines to make us sick.

The next chapter in understanding curing ulcerative colitis appears to be that for susceptible people sometimes extreme stress (as in my eldest brother suddenly dying) or something else such as simply eating white table sugar (sucrose), high fructose corn syrup, most grains, etc. feeds a bad microbe or enzyme causing  intestinal spasming. Normal people normally do not react with  intestinal spasming, fecal incontinence, and bleeding from eating white  table sugar (sucrose), high fructose corn syrup, most grains, etc.   Normal people react to extreme stress causing the fight or flight adrenaline reaction. That difference in people’s reaction appears to be the fundamental cause of intestinal disease - an unusual reaction to stress, food, or something else that causes intestinal spasming.

If anyone has experience in successfully treating stress related psychosomatic illness please email me for me to add that into this web site for the benefit of other readers.

Prescription drug induced ulcerative colitis is stated on the label of the antibiotic clindomycin as a side effect.  When I had a tooth’s root become infected the antibiotic of choice is clindomycin.  To avoid digesting it, instead of oral tablets I injected it intramuscularly, still it caused ulcerative colitis type bleeding out my butt.  Sidney’s diet will not help with ulcerative colitis induced prescription drug side effects. There are some alternative antibiotics but in my case I  decided to try to save the tooth with clindomycin at the risk of a flare.

As you scroll down below this caption and the pretty pictures to read the main content of my web site please keep in mind the relationship between intestinal inflammation and spasming.

Because I have ulcerative colitis I am very familiar with how to keep it under control mostly drug free with an anti-inflammatory diet called SCD or Specific Carbohydrate Diet.

As an example of a stress induced flare I was totally symptom free using diet alone until my eldest brother January 18, 2009 suddenly died; then I flared.  I realize now that this was neither a bacterial nor enzyme flare.  This flare was from the stress caused by my eldest brother’s sudden death.  The reason that this stress induced flare is so important to understand is that it cannot be cured by Sidney’s diet because it is not related to a unwanted microbe or enzyme colonizing our intestines.  It was simply stress and required a different cure that Sidney wrote in his book which is described below.

My flare symptoms were fecal incontinence, intestinal bleeding, defecating bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, and mostly bed ridden.  I also experienced nutritional deficiency (avitaminosis) symptoms from my intestine’s inability to absorb nutrients.

I tried using the anti-inflammatory prescription drug, Colazal 750, but it didn’t help because it is anti-inflammatory but not anti-spasmodic.

A funny realization came to me that one of the many old names for ulcerative colitis was “Spastic Colon”. I was able to get a reprint of Dr. Sidney Valentine Haas’ reprinted 1951 book titled, “Management of Celiac Disease”.  On page 96 of his book he wrote about quieting the digestive tract with opium or atropine and also the effect of this disease on the entire mind and body.

On June 11, 2009 late afternoon when over the phone I read this “quieting the digestive tract” sentence to my family medical doctor asking him what are the modern day equivalents to opium and atropine he said Lomotil and Donnatal.  The following morning, June 12, 2009 I took Dr. Haas’ book with me to show my doctor for him to prescribe those drugs for me.   By July 13th I was both drug and symptom free, remaining on my non-inflammatory SCD diet.  As of today 5/24/2010 I remain ulcerative colitis drug and symptom free only using SCD.  (At the beginning of November 2010 I experienced a stress and/or flu induced UC symptom resumption.  When I tried Lomotil and Donnatal they did not have as good an effect as previously.  I asked my family doctor for a generic Colazal 750 (balsalazide disodium 750) prescription and more lomotil which very much helped.  I experienced muscle and joint type cramping side effects from the Colazal, taking a day off, and then reducing the dosage from 3 capsules 3 times per day to 1 capsule 3 times per day.)

If you have questions email me at mbassan@earthlink.net.   My experiences are not medical advice.  You should consult your own medical doctor.  I am only letting you know what is working for me to control my ulcerative colitis mostly only with a diet.  For about 47 days total I used prescription drugs, 15 days Colazal 750 which didn’t work and for 32 days a combination of generic Lomotil and Donnata which worked.
